Resources: Archives
The following archival transcriptions contain "on-the-ground" commentaries and evidence about the Cattle-Killing from people on the frontier, from colonial officials reporting to their superiors, from magistrates writing to Xhosa chiefs, and so on. These are just a sample of the thousands of documents available in South African repositories.
The transcriptions below relate principally to three aspects of the movement: 1) the state of the frontier leading up to 1856; 2) the letters of Dr. John FitzGerald, who worked in King William's Town beginning in April 1856; and 3) reports from Charles Brownlee, Ngqika Commissioner to Sandile.
These are available here for preliminary research purposes only and should be checked against the original documents. For information on where to conduct further archival research, see this website's Overview.
